Our Approach
UNLV Writing Center consultants work in collaborative, writer-focused sessions to identify and address things like:
- Gaps in ideas
- Problems in organization
- Grammatical errors
- Formatting conventions
- Elements of style
Consultants will ask you to share any concerns you have about your paper so that they can provide you with the proper guidance and strategies to help you improve and feel more confident moving forward with your writing.
Types of Consultations
Instructor Notifications
UNLV Writing Center staff respect all writers’ confidentiality and will not communicate anything about consultations with anyone – including an instructor, coach, or advisor – unless that writer gives us permission.
If you would like your instructor, coach, and/or advisor notified of your consultation, put their full name and email address on your intake sheet. Once each week, we will send an email to the individual you want notified that includes an overview of what we discussed during your consultation. Please be aware of the following policies related to these notifications:
- Consultants will not sign anything, take photos with you, or offer any other options for notifying instructors of your consultation.
- We will not inform your instructors if you do not engage fully with the consultant during the session or if you simply stop by the Writing Center.
- If you realize after your consultation that you would like your instructor notified, you can call, email, send a Google Chat, or stop by to make that request. We can send a notification retroactively.
DRC Accommodations for Consultations
If you are registered with the Disability Resource Center and feel that you can benefit from additional assistance in your consultations, we can offer accommodations for you.
