University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is launching the state’s first Cannabis Policy Institute (CPI), led by industry expert Riana Durrett. The idea behind the new marijuana policy-focused institute is to promote and expand public policy research.

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas is establishing the Cannabis Policy Institute (CPI) to address the growing importance of cannabis legalization, particularly in Southern Nevada, where annual legal cannabis sales reach around $1 billion.

UNLV was one of the first institutions to lean fully into AI bots, creating an avatar of President Keith Whitfield in March 2022. AI had not become a household term yet, but the university wanted to offer a unique way to connect students to the president.

The new faculty pay raises have been compounded by budget shortfalls elsewhere, including slow enrollment growth.

Trustees advising leaders of southwest Utah, Nevada, and northern Arizona markets represent expertise in healthcare, business, banking, government, real estate, and higher education.
