UNLV is among only 120 universities across the nation with R1 status for “very high research” activity as designated by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. As a member of this elite category, UNLV stands as the first institution in Nevada to earn this status.

UNLV’s School of Public Health is the first accredited school of public health in Nevada designated by the Council of Education for Public Health and is one of only 66 schools throughout the world to hold this distinction. The School of Public Health is committed to preparing students to meet the critical need for public health professionals in Nevada, the nation, and the world.

Interplanetary missions are part of the curriculum at UNLV. From scientists to students, new findings and research are coming out of UNLV to support NASA's Perseverance Rover Mission. Engineering doctoral student Alexandra Washington is one of only 17 student scientists nationwide selected by NASA to contribute to this galactic operation; on campus, research teams are assessing landing locations and developing food sources for future space explorers, proving that the sky’s not the limit – it’s only the beginning.
