The Outstanding Teaching by Part-Time Faculty (PTI) Award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to student learning. The award is presented to as many as five part-time instructors each year and carries with it a one-time payment of $1,000, a personal plaque, and recognition at the UNLV Academic Achievement Awards Ceremony held every spring semester. The award is administered through the Teaching & Learning Commons.

Eligibility

  • Eligible candidates include part-time faculty teaching on a Letter of Appointment (LOA or LOB) who are not employed full-time by UNLV or the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) in any other capacity.
  • Candidates must have taught at least three credit hours at UNLV for at least three of the semesters in the period from Spring 2022 through Fall 2024.
  • Previous winners may reapply once three academic years have elapsed from their last award.

Application Materials

Applications are due before 5:00pm on Friday, February 28, 2025. Please submit your application in a single pdf file.

Incomplete applications will not be considered. Include a table of contents that follows the structure listed below.

Applications must contain each of the following items:

  • Table of Contents
  • A teaching statement, 1000 words max, that addresses the following:
    • Current and future goals for student learning -- What do you hope students take away from your classes? What are your goals going forward?
    • Student Engagement -- What is your focus and philosophy for engaging students? Please provide evidence in the appendix
    • Assessment of student learning -- What evidence do you have for the impact of your teaching?
    • Creating an inclusive environment -- How do you engage with student diversity and create an inclusive and equitable classroom. Please provide evidence in the appendix.
    • Innovation -- What creative modes of teaching and learning have you implemented? Please provide evidence in the appendix.
    • Special expertise -- What do you bring to the classroom, from your academic or professional experience, that makes your class special?
  • Recommendation letter from your department chair or appointed supervisor, one student, and an optional third letter of your choice. Letters should speak to the candidate’s effectiveness, achievements, or abilities as a teacher. Explicit, concrete examples of the instructor’s effectiveness are most useful.
  • A one-page summary of student teaching evaluations (using this form or similar) for up to three classes taught in the past three semesters. Alternatively: you may share a teaching observation conducted by a peer.
  • Curriculum Vitae - brief version that highlights recent teaching-related accomplishments
  • Appendix - This must include:
    • Three to five examples of materials (copies, photos, links, etc..) that the candidate feels are representative of his or her teaching accomplishments. Examples may include but are not limited to: course outlines/syllabi, samples of course handouts, activities, exercises the candidate has developed, distance education materials, videos developed by the candidate, and samples of assessments or exams. For each example, provide a concise summary (up to 150 words) explaining how the material aligns with and supports the key points outlined in your teaching statement.

Selection Criteria

Evaluators will be judging the application based on the following:

  • Focus/Philosophy of Teaching
  • Inclusivity and Equity in the Classroom 
  • Innovation / Special Expertise
  • Evidence of Impact on Student Success
  • Teaching Evaluations (Letters of Rec + Evals)

Evaluators will also be reflecting on:

  • What makes this applicant competitive?
  • What adversely impacts this applicant's competitiveness?
