UNLV senior Karina Lopez was selected as a recipient of the 2016 Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Scholarship. Each year two $4,500 scholarships are given to two students, one in Northern Nevada and one in Southern Nevada, who are pursuing a degree in education with the intention to teach in Nevada upon graduation.

The final presidential debate is just a little over a week away in Las Vegas, and UNLV will take center stage as millions of eyes will be focused on Nevada.

On a trip to Great Basin National Park, UNLV geoscience professor Matt Lachniet says that rainfall many millennia ago formed lakes in the desolate basins lining this strip of rural highway. Between the towns of Pioche and Panaca, we stop at Cathedral Gorge, where a multimillion-year dance of erosion and tectonics forged a slender canyon fringed with clay-colored spires.

The second presidential debate is in the books. The third and final debate is going to be right here in Las Vegas at UNLV’s Thomas and Mack Center.

As the presidential contenders battled it out on the podium tonight, back here at home, UNLV is bracing to host the third and final debate 10 days from now.

The University of Nevada Las Vegas will be the site of the final presidential debate on Oct. 19. Las Vegas is expected to benefit significantly from the publicity value of the event, as only the Olympics and the Super Bowl attract more viewers than a presidential debate.

In “Unify, Regionalize, Diversify: An Economic Development Agenda for Nevada,” a 2011 Brookings Institution report that undergirds the state’s current economic development plan, the authors detailed the need for Southern Nevada to strengthen its core economy of gaming/tourism/conventions and to economically diversify within that sector.
