The Millions

ZZ Packer donned a judge’s robe and banged the gavel for a trial argument-themed reading inside an old federal courthouse. Later, Miranda July read aloud the sexual fantasies of 30 women in her audience. And before each of those, Luís Alberto Urrea shared psalms about his Tijuana childhood as hummingbirds bobbed, a coyote yipped, and the sun fell behind sandstone bluffs at Red Rock Canyon, where the first reading took place.

The Henderson Detention Center’s contract to house detainees for Immigration and Customs Enforcement generates $9 million to $10 million per year, a moneymaker city officials steadfastly defend as essential to offsetting costs and bolstering coffers.

Nevada will continue to be ground zero in the immigration debate, potentially for the next two election cycles. Nevada voters may get to choose in the 2018 election whether to amend the state constitution to ban sanctuary cities. Senate Minority Leader Michael Roberson is leading the charge and announced last week the creation of Prevent Sanctuary Cities, a political action committee to pursue a ballot question that would prevent Nevada from allowing sanctuary cities.

UNLV is located just outside the boundaries of the glittering Las Vegas Strip, but alumni believe there’s a better way to define its presence in Clark County.

UNLV’s 10-year-old Black Mountain Institute has long been a force, from developing voices in the MFA program and hosting Pulitzer- and Nobel-winning authors to sheltering foreign writers from persecution. And for 16 years, the Vegas Valley Book Festival has celebrated “written, spoken and illustrated word” with readings, workshops and keynotes by the likes of John Irving, Chuck Palahniuk, Sarah Vowell and Michael Chabon.

If you were lucky, you discovered it as I did. Perhaps you were invited to see a friend’s band at Favorites or the Sports Pub—Constant Moving Party, Endless Mindless, one of those—and you spent the rest of the night dancing to a DJ set by Robert Oleysyck or Romney “World Famous Rocket” Smith. Maybe you had some studying to do, and instead of doing it in the library or in your apartment, you got a table at Cafe Copioh or Cafe Espresso Roma. If you were inspired by something you’d heard on KUNV’s Rock Avenue, you went to Benway Bop or the Underground looking for it.

Once again, Nevada lands at the bottom of a list, this time ranking the best and worst states for children’s health care. The state finished No. 51 (the study included the District of Columbia) in research by WalletHub, a credit services website. The findings continue a long, depressing tradition for Nevada, which is no stranger to performing poorly in measures of health. However, valley health care professionals say they’re optimistic that medical services for kids are improving in the state, even if it’s happening more slowly than anybody would like.
