The primary purpose of history is to understand the past as a guide to understanding the present and future. History should not be deemed as feel-good nostalgia – much of history is painful and shameful. So how do we find the right balance? Is statue-cide the right answer?

The U.S. Supreme Court just handed down a decision in the case of the United States Forest Services versus Cowpasture River Preservation Association — ruling 7-2 that natural gas pipeline developers may proceed with building a tiny portion of their Atlantic Coast Pipeline across the path of the Appalachian Trail in Virginia. And while it is a big win for the pipeline developers — Duke Energy DUK, Dominion Energy and Southern Company SCCO — the line still faces seven other lawsuits in federal court.

There have been a number of studies conducted over the years to explore the impact of gambling on both the individual and society. The results, when viewed with open eyes, have consistently revealed that the activity is relatively innocuous compared to other things (alcohol consumption can be much more damaging, both from a financial and a health perspective), and a new study is beginning that looks to provide more insight on two specific areas of the gambling ecosystem, online and sports gambling. The study is getting underway now and is expected to be one of the most detailed investigative operations conducted on the subjects.
All casino hotels that discover a COVID-19 case among their workers should contact the Southern Nevada Health District. It is up to this institution, and the operator in question, to decide what to do -if they do something- after receiving the news.

While other U.S. retail stores are disappearing, dollar stores are popping up everywhere. In fact, the two biggest operators added 942 storefronts over a recent 12-month stretch, for a total of more than 31,000 sites. That's more than all the McDonald's and Starbucks outlets in the U.S. combined.

June is designated as PTSD Awareness month, which concentrates on the impact of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder among people who suffer mentally, physically and/or emotionally from a past trauma.
