Our Philosophy of Student Success
UNLV’s undergraduate student population is one of the most diverse in the nation and represents students from Clark County as well as students from many states and countries. We are proud to serve our local and regional community through a top tier academic experience for 33,000 Rebels who are working toward improving their skills, competencies, and economic and social mobility through earning a degree from UNLV. Our philosophy of student success in grounded in equity minded approaches that leverage the unique strengths of our diverse student population and striving to become a student ready institution focused on serving the students who enroll at UNLV.
Who We Are
UNLV’s student success team within the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education is dedicated to planning, overseeing, and administering retention, progression, and completion initiatives including academic advising, peer mentoring, and first-year and beyond-success programming. Our team works to enhance and improve the student experience through the integration and coordination of campus wide student success efforts that increase involvement, course progression, and sense of belonging for students at UNLV.
The Office of the Associate Vice Provost for Student Success (AVPSS) is responsible for the institutional leadership, mission and vision, and ongoing continuous improvement of 11 college based academic advising centers, pre-health professions advising, campus-wide retention, progress, and completion (RPC) initiatives, and comprehensive student success programming available throughout students’ academic career. In addition, the office oversees UNLV advising extension offices: UNLV @ Nellis housed at Nellis Air Force Base and the UNLV/CSN Transfer Program housed at three of the College of Southern Nevada campuses. The AVPSS and student success leadership team develops, promotes, and leads training, professional development, certification, and recognition opportunities for both paraprofessional student staff and professional advisors. The overall assessment and evaluation of academic advising, campus-wide communication through the student success platform, leadership of the UNLV Academic Advising Council and university academic advising commissions is provided by the Office of the Associate Vice Provost for Student Success.
What We Do
The office conducts research, program assessment and evaluation, coordinates and implements initiatives, and evaluates comprehensive ongoing and ad hoc efforts that directly impact student retention, progression and completion.
The office works to:
- Coordinate and support initiatives and retention efforts that increase the success of UNLV students
- Collaborate with academic colleges, departments, and offices across campus
- Support campus-wide efforts by expanding research and assessment related to retention, progression and completion
- Partner with parents, faculty, and staff to integrate and coordinate student success efforts to provide a premier student experience for undergraduate students
