Planning Your Safety
Planning in advance and knowing what you will do in different emergency situations is key to your safety.
- Develop a communications plan. In the event of an emergency know who to call. Gather emergency phone numbers for local hospitals, family doctors, pharmacies, neighbors, utility companies, poison control center, etc.
- Compile contact information. Determine the family, relatives, and friends to call, text, or email in the event of an emergency.
- Establish escape routes. Determine several possible exits from your residence and workplace.
- Designate a safe family meet-up location in the neighborhood, city, and out of state if evacuation is necessary.
What Can I Do to Stay Safe?
University Police Services’ officers have been trained to provide assistance as first responders for medical emergencies, and every year they undergo certification training to respond to active shooter situations. While our department takes steps each day to ensure the safety of the things we can control, natural disasters and dangerous situations can still occur when inclement weather, utility failures, and other unpredictable incidents present a threat to the safety of the campus community.
