Each year, thousands of students attending colleges nationwide receive ROTC scholarships. ROTC awards students studying science, engineering, nursing, and business, as well as a variety of other majors.

ROTC scholarships are not based on financial need. Instead, they’re awarded on merit. Merit is exhibited in academic achievement, physical fitness, and extracurricular activities, such as sports, student government or part-time work.

High School Students

Army ROTC High School Scholarship

This scholarship is for high school seniors (or individuals who will receive their GEDs) planning to enter college as a freshmen the fall following their senior year in high school.

The scholarship pays:

  • Full tuition plus mandatory fees or applied toward room and board
  • A $1,200-per-year book allowance
  • A tax-free stipend of $420 per month

Deadline for starting applications is Jan. 10 of your senior year.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for a high school scholarship:

  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Be 17 by October of the semester you are entering college but not reach 31 years of age during the year you graduate from college and receive your commission
  • Have a minimum high school GPA of 2.5
  • No medical issues that will prevent you from receiving an approved Army medical physical or from serving without limitations in the military
  • Be a high school graduate or possess an equivalent certificate by September of the year you will enter college
  • Submit an academic plan, Cadet Command Form 104-R
  • Score a minimum of 920 on the SAT or a 19 composite on the ACT, not including the written portion of the test
  • Have no moral or personal conviction that will prevent you from:
    • Bearing arms
    • Supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States
  • Receive a waiver for any arrest or civil conviction (if applicable)

Although medical qualification is not required to be eligible to receive a scholarship offer, medical qualification is required in order to receive the scholarship benefits.

To receive the scholarship benefits, you must also agree to accept a commission and serve in the Army on Active Duty or Reserve Duty (Army National Guard or U.S. Army Reserve) upon graduation and receipt of your commission.

College Students

Army ROTC General Scholarship

This scholarship is for college freshmen, sophomores, or incoming juniors who are currently enrolled or accepted to UNLV. Graduate students (both masters and doctorates) may receive this scholarship benefit for two years.

Students who are soldiers in the U.S. Army Reserve or National Guard must receive a conditional release from their component to accept this type of scholarship.

The scholarship pays:

  • Full tuition plus mandatory fees or up to $5,000 per semester (cadet elects which option at the beginning of the school year)
  • A $1,200 per year book allowance
  • A tax-free of $420 per month
  • Eligible to compete for active duty

Guaranteed Reserve Force Duty (GRFD) Scholarship

This scholarship is for college sophomores or juniors who are currently enrolled in or accepted to UNLV. Graduate students (both masters and doctorates) may receive this scholarship benefit for two years. Students who accept this scholarship are guaranteed to commission in the National Guard or Reserve Component. Students will also be Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) Cadets with a local U.S. Army Reserve or Army National Guard unit and continue to drill with their unit.

The scholarship pays:

  • Full tuition plus mandatory fees or up to $5,000 per semester (cadet elects which option at the beginning of the school year)
  • A $1,200 per year book allowance
  • A tax-free of $420 per month
  • Not eligible to compete for active duty

  • Have a minimum high school and college GPA of 2.5
  • No medical issues that will prevent you from receiving an approved Army medical physical or from serving without limitations in the military
  • Be a high school graduate or possess an equivalent certificate by September of the year you will enter college
  • Submit an academic plan, Cadet Command Form 104-R
  • Achieve a B or above in MIL 100/200 courses
  • Pass an APFT (or other physical assessment)
  • Have no moral or personal conviction that will prevent you from:
    • Bearing arms
    • Supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States
  • Receive a waiver for any arrest or civil conviction (if applicable)

Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP)

You may be able to take advantage of a program that allows you to participate in the Senior ROTC while being enlisted in the Army National Guard or Army Reserve at the same time, provided a vacancy exists in either a Guard or Reserve unit. It's called the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP), and it means that while you're still in college, you can be gaining valuable experience and earning extra income. In the SMP, you will be paid at the rate of at least E-5 for your Guard or Reserve service. You'll receive the ROTC monthly stipend allowance as well. You'll serve as an officer trainee in a Guard or Reserve unit during monthly drills and perform duties commensurate with the rank of second lieutenant.
