Statement of Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to provide guidelines for UNLV community and visitors conducting and/or participating in events where alcohol is served on the university campus or on leased premises. The policy exists to inform sponsors of the events involving alcohol about their responsibilities and the consequences for non-adherence.

Entities Affected by this Policy

UNLV staff, faculty, students, guests, visitors and vendors. Thomas & Mack Center does not fall under this policy.

Policy

In order to provide a safe and healthy environment for students, to comply with federal, state, and local law, and to support the academic mission of the University, the following policy for the sale, service, distribution, and use of alcoholic beverages has been adopted.

Any and all events occurring on UNLV owned or leased property where alcohol is to be served is subject to this Policy, as well as any and all applicable local, state and/or federal laws. This policy does not apply to events sponsored by Thomas and Mack Center within facilities managed by Thomas and Mack Center.

The university will support and enforce these regulations through its authority as stated in the Board of Regents (BOR) Handbook, Alcoholic Beverage Policy (Title 4, Chapter 1, Sec. 10), Alcoholic Beverage Policy for Students (Title 4, Chapter 20, Sec. 4) and the Student Conduct Code.

Individuals may also be held responsible by other authorities for infraction of state laws and county ordinances.

Sanctions for Violation of the Alcohol Policy

  1. Failure to comply with any applicable policies, procedures, and/or state and/or local laws may result in, but is not limited to, one or more of the following actions:
    1. Referral for disciplinary action (including but not limited to immediate termination of the event if violations occur during the event, which may be ordered by the designated Responsible Person, University Police Department (UPD), or local law enforcement.
    2. Arrest of or legal action against the designated Responsible Person for violation of the law.
    3. Referral to the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA) for review of any alleged violations and appropriate action.
  2. Investigation and, when necessary, adjudication of alleged violations will be conducted as outlined in the Board of Regent Nevada System of Higher Education Code and/ or the Student Conduct Code.
  3. UPD may, at their discretion, terminate an event which they believe is not in compliance with this policy. A report of any policy violation(s) and the reason(s) for termination of the event will be forwarded to the Office of the VPSA for review.
