Three nurses walking down a hallway

The UNLV Rebel Nurse Mentoring Program (RNMP) connects current nursing students with alumni by matching them with a professional in their area of interest who can offer advice and information about career options or other issues relevant to nursing.

The program is open to all alumni and current Level 4 students of the School of Nursing, as well as UNLV Alumni working in nursing-related fields.

The application period opens during the Spring and Fall semesters, with student/alumni matching taking place soon thereafter.

Alumni

You will make a tremendous impact on a student’s life by becoming a mentor. You will serve as a guide, answering questions, giving advice, and helping them learn more about themselves and their area of interest in nursing.

Requirements

If you are an alumna/alumnus of the School of Nursing working in a nursing related field, then you are eligible to mentor a student. Once we receive your application, we will match you with a student whose interest closely aligns with your professional experience.

The only requirement to participate is that you attend the UNLV RNMP Alumni Mentor Orientation/Mixer. This will give you the opportunity to meet your student in person, learn more about the mentoring program, and work with your mentee to develop goals and action steps for participation in the program.

Expectations

Regular communication will help you and your mentee get the most out of the program. Mentors and mentees can communicate with one another via email, phone, and visits to your workplace if you choose. This is not a job placement program and you are not expected to offer employment to the student you are mentoring.

You are asked to communicate regularly with the student as the two of you see fit. The student may have questions about areas of study, career options, or your career area of expertise.

Students

If you are fully admitted into the School of Nursing, and are a Level IV student, then you are eligible to participate in the mentoring program. The application period opens each semester. We will match you with an alumni mentor whose professional experiences closely match your interests (as best we can).

You are expected to maintain your mentoring partnership until graduation and are also expected to participate in the RNMP Mentoring Orientation/Mixer. This will be your opportunity to meet your mentor in person and work with them to develop your goals and action steps for participation in the program.

An alumni mentor can give you some guidance and help you with all of the questions you may have. Alumni mentors serve as a guide, giving advice, answering questions and helping you learn more about your field of interest and about yourself.

You can communicate with your mentor via email, phone, or visits to your mentor’s workplace if your mentor chooses. You may wish to ask your mentor about areas of study, career options, or their career or area of expertise and interests.
