Center for Autism first stage of UNLV’s School of Medicine

The first batch of prospective UNLV School of Medicine students will visit campus today for interviews that could grant them admission and full-ride scholarships. The fledgling medical school received preliminary accreditation last month, paving the way for it to begin accepting applications Oct. 29. Since then, the school has received about 650 applications from interested students, about half of whom have some tie to Nevada, administrators said.

Actress Pia Zadora wants families in the Las Vegas Valley dealing with autism to know that “it’s going to get better.” Zadora is a supporter of the new UNLV Medicine Ackerman Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment Solutions, 630 S. Rancho Drive, Suite A, which opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Oct. 13.

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Medicine has gotten the official go-ahead to start classes in July, but Nevada children are already benefiting from it. The school started sifting through applications during the first week of November to select its first class after it was recently granted preliminary accreditation.

One showed an internal image of a typical, healthy body — each translucent rib in alignment, a clearly defined, asymmetric heart and nearly invisible lungs.
