The UNLV Wind Orchestra presents The President's Concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, in Artemus Ham Concert Hall.
Funds raised from this very special concert will support the UNLV Wind Orchestra as orchestra members travel to perform in the grand finale of the Festival des Anches d’Azur in La Croix Valmer, France, by invitation of the city’s mayor. During its 20-year history, the festival has grown and evolved significantly, and the UNLV Wind Orchestra in the only American university ensemble ever invited to perform.
The UNLV Wind Orchestra last made an appearance at the festival in June 2005 where it performed two concerts — receiving commendations from the local government and citizenry, with more than 2,000 guests in attendance. It is that stand-out performance that has earned the UNLV Wind Orchestra a second invitation.
Conducted by Thomas G. Leslie, the concert features guest artist Alfonse Anderson, tenor and UNLV professor of voice and vocal coordinator. Guest conductors include Col. John R. Bourgeois, director emeritus of the United States Marine Band — "The President's Own;" Johan de Meij, conductor and winner of the Sudler, Oman, and Corcianon International Composition competitions; and Zane S. Douglass, UNLV instructor of conducting.
