The UNLV Division of Jazz & Commercial Music is proud to announce the recipients of six prestigious 2022 DownBeat Student Music Awards. These awards will be publicized in DownBeat Magazine’s June issue.
Established in 1976, the DownBeat Student Music Awards are considered the most prestigious awards in jazz education. Hundreds of musicians, music educators, and music industry professionals received their first international recognition as DownBeat Student Music Award winners. The UNLV Jazz & Commercial Music program has garnered 39 DownBeat Student Music Awards since 2010.
“The six DownBeat Student Music Awards earned by UNLV in 2022 demonstrate the sustained creative output of our dedicated and talented students. We continue to be proud of the worldwide recognition our students receive for their dedication and commitment to musical excellence,” said Dave Loeb, director of the UNLV Division of Jazz & Commercial Music.
Congratulations to the following award recipients:

UNLV Jazz Ensemble I, directed by professors Dave Loeb and Nathan Tanouye, received Outstanding Performance in the Asynchronous Large Jazz Ensemble Graduate College category.

The Contemporary Ensemble, directed by Julian Tanaka, received Outstanding Performance in the Blues/Pop/Rock Group Graduate College category.

The Contemporary Ensemble also won Asynchronous Blues/Pop/Rock Group Graduate College Outstanding Performance.

The Latin Ensemble, directed by Uli Geissendoerfer, won Outstanding Performance in the Graduate College Category for Latin Group.

Keegan Carter Won Outstanding Composition Small Ensemble in the Undergraduate College category for his composition “Destino de la Suerte.”

Keegan Carter also is the Undergraduate College Winner Engineered Studio Recording for his engineering on Laura Taylor’s “Ill Wind” found on UNLV’s album Looking Up.
