The UNLV Division of Jazz & Commercial Music is delighted to announce they are the recipients of five prestigious 2023 DownBeat Student Music Awards. These awards will be publicized in DownBeat magazine’s June issue.
The DownBeat Student Music Awards are considered the most notable awards in jazz education. Hundreds of musicians, music educators, and music industry professionals received their first international acknowledgment as DownBeat Student Music Award winners. The UNLV Jazz & Commercial Music program has garnered 44 DownBeat Student Music Awards since 2010.
“We are very proud of the sustained creative output of our dedicated students and the distinguished recognition they have established for our university worldwide,” said Dave Loeb, director of the UNLV Division of Jazz & Commercial Music.

- Large Jazz Ensemble: Graduate College Co-Winner UNLV Jazz Ensemble I - Dave Loeb and Nathan Tanouye
- Jazz Combo: Graduate College Outstanding Performance Joe Williams Scholarship Honors Quartet - Dave Loeb with outstanding soloist Toscha Comeaux
- Small Vocal Jazz Group: Graduate College Outstanding Performance - Studio Scarlet, Lara Vivian Smith
- Latin Group: Graduate College Outstanding Performance UNLV Latin Jazz Ensemble - José “Pepe” Jiménez
