The UNLV jazz studies program celebrates the 40th anniversary of the DownBeat Magazine award-winning UNLV Jazz Ensemble with a concert at 7:30p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17. The concert will feature the UNLV Jazz Alumni Band and UNLV Jazz Ensemble I. It is also the release event for the 2013 UNLV jazz studies program CD, "The Four of Us."
The concert is in Artemus Ham Concert Hall, with general admission tickets priced at $10 and available through the UNLV Performing Arts Center Box Office at pac.unlv.edu or 702-895-ARTS (2787).
It will feature the UNLV Alumni Jazz Band, conducted by Nathan Tanouye, and UNLV Jazz Ensemble I, conducted by Dave Loeb and Nathan Tanouye, with special guest Dennis Mackrel, in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the UNLV Jazz Ensemble.
Mackrel is returning to perform with the UNLV Jazz Alumni Band and UNLV Jazz Ensemble I after directing the Count Basie Orchestra for many years. Mackrel played drums with the UNLV Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Frank Gagliardi before moving to New York City and enjoying a highly successful career as a widely recognized jazz artist.
The UNLV Department of Music Jazz Studies Program has received prestigious 5 DownBeat Magazine Student Music Awards since 2010, competing among the some of the finest university music programs worldwide.
