The UNLV Jazz Ensemble I and Contemporary Jazz Ensemble perform in concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, in the Judy Bayley Theatre. The concert is, in part, a celebration of the recent rave review their newest CD, Extra Credit/Latin Journey II, received from internationally respected publication JazzTimes. This is their seventh consecutive review. More than 400 CDs were submitted from distinguished programs worldwide, and only four were selected for review.
Tickets for the concert are $10 and can be purchased at the UNLV Performing Arts Center box office or by calling 702-895-ARTS (2787).
Additional accomplishments of the UNLV Jazz Ensemble include being named winners of Down Beat Magazine Student Music Awards Large Jazz Ensemble Graduate College Outstanding Performance; touring Europe, Japan, Poland, South America, Spain, Portugal, and Morocco; performing at the San Sebastian Jazz Festival; sharing top billing with the Freddie Hubbard Sextet; being featured in concerts and recordings with artists-in-residence and special guest artists throughout the year; recording several CDs that have received critical acclaim, including the Downbeat Five-Star Award for Muy Caliente; being named Reno Jazz Festival Winner College Combo Division and Outstanding College Performers; being named Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival College Big Band Finalist; and performing in concert with Manhattan Transfer, Bebe Neuwirth, Ben Vereen, Marvin Hamlish, Tommy Tune and the casts of Forbidden Broadway and Jeckyll and Hyde.
