Congratulations to UNLV's Director of Galleries Jerry Schefcik, who was recently appointed by Gov. Brian Sandoval to the Nevada Arts Council. His four-year term began July 1 and will run until June 30, 2017.
Schefcik began as director of the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery in 1991. In 2012 he was given responsibility for the remodeled Marjorie Barrick Museum and its new focus on contemporary art. He also curates the Metcalf Gallery in the Tam Alumni Center and other satellite spaces throughout the UNLV campus.
Along with his gallery responsibilities, Schefcik teaches the Gallery Practices series on gallery/museum management and oversees the gallery internship program. He served as exhibitions curator for Nevada Institute for Contemporary Art for 11 years, and curator at the McCarran International Airport Arts Advisory Subcommittee for 5 years. He continues to work as juror for local agencies and serves with various arts organizations in Las Vegas and the Western region. He currently serves on the City of Las Vegas Arts Commission.
Schefcik received his B.A. in Art and Design from Brigham Young University and his M.A. in Art History and Museum Training from the University of Denver.
