The UNLV Choral Ensembles present the Women's Chorus, Varsity Men's Glee Club and contemporary a cappella ensemble Lamprophony at 7:30pm Friday, Nov. 22 in the Dr. Arturo Rando-Grillot Recital Hall, located on the northeast end of the university campus in the Lee & Thomas Beam Music Center. Jocelyn K. Jensen and David B. Weiller conduct the performance, accompanied by pianists Barbara Buer and Jason Corpus.
The concert commemorates the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's assassination with "What Kind of Peace?" by William G. Harbinson and the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht (The Night of Broken Glass) with Michael Horvit's setting of "Even When God Is Silent." Other inspirational works include "Nigra sum" by Pablo Casals, "I Thank You God" by Gwyneth Walker, Gy?rgy Orb?n's "Gloria" from Mass #6, and "Tshotsholoza," a South African freedom song.
Lamprophony is a contemporary a cappella ensemble led by music student Gianni Becker. Now in its fourth year, the singers will present "When I'm Gone," also known as "The Cup Song."
The university choral ensembles enjoy a reputation for vibrant performances. The choirs recently were praised for a concert described as "...glorious, yet disciplined. The choruses performed with unaffected charisma." Annual tours have encompassed the southwestern United States as well as Hawaii, New York, Mexico, and Canada. The Women's Chorus and Varsity Men's Glee Club, established over 20 years ago, represent students from throughout the campus as well as alumni and community members.
Admission for the November 22 Women's Chorus and Varsity Men's Glee Club performance is free and open to the public. The choral concert season continues with the Mozart Requiem on November 26 presented by the University Singers, Chamber Chorale and University Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 pm in Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall.
