UNLV Athletics is hosting a Bed Build Day on April 30 in the parking lot of the Thomas & Mack Center, and the public is invited to help. The department has partnered with nonprofit Sleep in Heavenly Peace on a goal to build 100 beds to help Las Vegas youth that are in need of a comfortable place to sleep.
The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with an eye on setting the organization's local chapter one-day record.
“We are looking forward to coming together as a university, athletics department and community, to help provide beds to kids sleeping on the floor in Las Vegas,” said UNLV Director of Athletics Erick Harper. “All children deserve a safe, comfortable place to lay their heads so we are inviting all to come out on April 30 to volunteer, as we make a difference by building 100 beds for kids in need.”
Those interested in helping, can visit UNLVRebels.com/BedBuild to learn more and to register to volunteer. The volunteer event is open to the first 400 individuals.
Donations can be made through the website as well. A fundraising goal of $25,000 has been set to pay for the materials to build 100 beds. Donations are tax-deductible and any excess funds that exceed the goal will be donated directly to the Las Vegas chapter of Sleep In Heavenly Peace for additional supplies.
“The Las Vegas Chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace is excited and grateful for the partnership with UNLV,” said Chris McDowell, chapter co-president. “Our collective efforts will greatly benefit children sleeping on the floor in our community.”
