The University of Nevada, Las Vegas is deeply saddened to confirm the passing of Dr. Raymond K. "Keith" Schwer. Dr. Schwer passed away Thursday morning after an illness. He was 66 years old.
"Keith Schwer was the mainstay of economic analysis for years in Las Vegas," said UNLV President Neal Smatresk. "His passing leaves us all bereft of his wisdom and expertise. Our campus community is profoundly saddened by his loss and our hearts go out to his family."
Dr. Schwer earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Maryland in 1975. His 25 years of university program experience in business and economics were spent at institutions in Maryland, Nevada, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Vermont and Wyoming. He joined the UNLV faculty on July 1, 1986, and had since become the recognized authority on the business and economic environment of Las Vegas, the state of Nevada and the region. Dr. Schwer was a valued colleague and friend to UNLV who will be greatly missed.
Dr. Schwer is survived by his wife Kaye and children Nancy, Amanda and Michelle. A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, December 10, 2009, from 1 - 3 p.m. in the Tam Alumni Center at UNLV (off Maryland Parkway at Harmon). The service will be open to the public, as it is the only service planned by the family.
