Learning to Love the Family Business

Pate Thomas initially had no desire to add his name to the long list of family members who became Rebels and then educators. Now? He’s a proud alum, a difference-making educator, and the boss of a brand-new high school.

Alumnus Pate Thomas, principal at the new South Career and Technical Academy magnet school, has family roots that go back to UNLV's founding. His great-grandfather was Herbert Derfelt, who oversaw the Night Classes program when UNLV was a branch campus. (Becca Schwartz/UNLV)
