Be captivated by multifaceted guitarist Meng Su during the UNLV Performing Arts Center’s 46th season final performance at 7:30 p.m. May 5 in the Black Box Theatre at the Alta Ham Fine Arts building.
With her stunning virtuosity and refined artistry, Su often performs as part of the Beijing Guitar Duo. She began studying the guitar at age five, and currently teaches at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. New York Concert Review writes her performance is “... seemingly effortless and stunningly polished.” Classical Guitar magazine called her debut recording “awe-inspiring.”
Su has performed in over 30 different countries around the world in halls such as the Concertgebouw, Palau de Musica, Tchaikovsky Hall, and the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing. This past summer, she collaborated with ballerina YuanYuan Tan in a dance musical and toured China together to critical acclaim.
Her debut duo CD, “Maracaípe,” received a Latin GRAMMY nomination for the titled piece, which was dedicated to the duo by renowned guitarist/composer Sergio Assad. Their second CD, “Bach to Tan Dun,” a "must-listen" according to composer Tan Dun, has been widely noted for the world-premiere recording of his “Eight Memories in Watercolor.”
Born in Qingdao, China, Su showed her talents from an early age at the Central Conservatory in Beijing. She has won first prize in numerous international competitions around the world, the last one being in the prestigious Parkening International Guitar competition in 2015. She graduated with an artist diploma, a master’s degree and graduate diploma in chamber music with Maestro Manuel Barrueco at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University.
