Up-and-coming local artists have a new outlet to showcase their work: The Marjorie Barrick Museum Community Gallery at UNLV. Mixed media artwork from students, alumni and local artists will populate the museum's latest effort to highlight the growing local art scene.
Gallery exhibits will rotate every six to eight weeks and offer a mix of visual art, including photography, painting, drawing, sculpture and more. UNLV students oversee all aspects of the gallery, contact artists, choose artwork, set up exhibits and plan and host receptions. The gallery's first exhibit is on display through Aug. 21 and features the work of 23 local artists - including 10 UNLV students.
"The gallery gives new artists a chance to show their work to the public and offers UNLV students - both artists and curators - an opportunity to engage in the process of setting up an exhibit," said Aurore Giguet, curator of the Marjorie Barrick Museum. "We want to grow a collaborative artistic community on campus by offering as many opportunities as possible for students, staff and community members to get involved."
A free reception to celebrate the gallery's first exhibit will be held Aug. 21, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. To become a part of an upcoming Community Gallery exhibit, please contact Josue Fred, UNLV student curator, at (702) 895-3381. The gallery's second exhibit is scheduled to open Oct. 22.
