History researchers at UNR estimate Washoe County alone has at least 11,000 racist covenants, legal property documents that once restricted anyone not white from purchasing or living in the home. At Friday’s hearing, Harris introduced a conceptual amendment to allocate $150,000 to UNR and UNLV to aid in researching and identifying racist covenants in the state.

Las Vegas is stepping into the spotlight in the film industry, with plans for two large studios coming to the valley and a proposed tax incentive and infrastructure bill to help with the transition. One studio - The Las Vegas Media Campus - would be built near the Durango Resort and Casino by California-based Birtcher Development in partnership with UNLV, and an even bigger Sony Pictures studio is planned for somewhere in Summerlin with the Howard Hughes Corporation.

As the federal government hurtles toward running out of cash and the Treasury Department takes “extraordinary measures” to pay the bills, there’s one line item the Treasury can worry a bit less about this year: tax refunds.
