Several Nevada officials are describing a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action as an attack on efforts to end racism.

In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court ruled Thursday against the use of affirmative action at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina (UNC), declaring that an applicant’s race cannot be considered as an admissions factor. The decision, undoing 45 years’ worth of precedent at the high court, will have wide-ranging impacts across higher education.

UNLV intends to keep its admissions standards unchanged, despite today’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court ending affirmative action, a decades-old norm intended to bolster the number of minority students accepted into universities.

Re “Titan submersible implosion: another safety lesson learned through tragedy” (Editorial, June 24): Despite our ability to adapt and our incredible intelligence, humans can’t live in the extreme conditions of the deep ocean. The use of an experimental submersible that was not tested with the full rigor necessary to operate it as a commercial vessel should never have been allowed.

After a drawn-out struggle, the remaining 90 homeowners in the sinking and predominantly Black neighborhood of Windsor Park in North Las Vegas will be relocated to new homes - now that Gov. Joe Lombardo has agreed to sign Senate Bill 450.
