DISPATCH FROM THE BAYOU STATE: Roughly 70,000 Louisiana school children remain out of school because of flooding, and state Superintendent John White tells Morning Education that students in three districts won’t likely be back in class until after Labor Day. That’s down from the 22 districts (having a combined 200,000 students) that were out of school in the days following the devastating floods. East Baton Rouge, Livingston and Central Community districts remain closed for now. “We are steadily making progress and schools are coming back,” White said.
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid’s looming retirement leaves quite the vacuum to fill in Nevada. The contest to replace one of the body’s longest-serving Democrats is labeled a toss-up between former Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto (D) and Republican Rep. Joe Heck. And with Heck running for a promotion, he leaves behind an open playing field for his District 3 seat.
