When I received the email from my editor that Michael Kagan, a graduate of the Bethlehem school district, had published his first book, I immediately wrote back that I wanted to interview him. I was Mike’s seventh-grade English teacher back in the late 1980s, and I remembered him fondly.

Many advocates of “defunding the police” contend that too many police encounters with civilians concern trivial matters. Defunding proponents worry that poor decisions by officers can escalate tensions and lead to unnecessary uses of force. They argue that the police mandate should be more narrowly focused on responding to “serious” crimes, especially violent felonies. All other matters should not be considered police business. This premise has gained a receptive hearing in our political climate. Most people instinctively support the idea of leaving management of serious felonies to the police, who are certainly less likely to get into trouble if their job is simply to arrest violent felons.

Alzheimer's disease has been an unsolved puzzle for scientists since the first patient was found over 100 years ago. Different theories like cholinergic hypothesis, amyloid cascade hypothesis, and tau protein hypothesis have made progress in research but failed to bring new therapies to patients. In recent years scientists started to focus on the brain-gut axis, with its breakthrough in the fields of Parkinson's disease, depression and autism. Data linking the microbiome to Alzheimer's disease and GV-971 targeting the brain-gut axis launched by Shanghai Green Valley Pharmaceuticals were presented at the 34th Alzheimer's Association International Conference (AAIC).

In the latest round of feuding between the world’s leading economies, China has vowed to retaliate after the United States ordered its consulate in Houston shut within 72 hours. Although the latest move by Washington is being viewed as an attempt by President Trump’s campaign strategists to deflect attention for his failure to deal decisively with the Covid-19 pandemic, it could quickly escalate into another ugly tit-for-tat trade war. As trade and political tensions between Washington and Beijing flare up, the specter of China using rare earth minerals as a ‘nuclear option’ has once again resurfaced.
