The future of some of Nevada’s most well-known brothels is in voters’ hands, according to the Associated Press. A November ballot initiative seeks to shut down the four legal brothels in Lyon County, all of which are owned by Dennis Hof, who is currently running as a Trump-loving Republican candidate for the Nevada Legislature.

Sex workers and adult film actors spoke out today as Rudy Giuliani doubled down on comments he made about Stormy Daniels, saying she has no "reputation" or "credibility" because of the work she does.

It may seem surprising in an era of #MeToo and #Times Up, where a national conversation and reckoning is going on with regard to the exploitation of women, but Barbara Brents is bullish on brothels. “Time’s not up for Nevada brothels,” the UNLV professor and sex-industry researcher says. “If anything, the time is now for Nevada brothels.”

In Pahrump, Nevada – a desert enclave famous for its “live and let live” spirit – you can openly carry a gun, race sports cars, buy marijuana, own lions, gamble and purchase sex. But there’s a movement under way to rein in the frontier town’s freedom-loving ways.

This month, President Donald Trump signed two bills aimed at combating sex trafficking just days after the Department of Justice seized the sex ad website backpage.com. But many sex workers and sex work activists — including those in Las Vegas — are arguing that the implementation of the Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA) and the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (SESTA), and the takedown of Backpage simultaneously endanger consenting sex workers.

Brothels are legal in Nevada, but only in counties with populations of fewer than 450,000. But could a move by Dennis Hof, who owns the Moonlite Bunny Ranch and six more brothels, lead to more acceptance of brothels?
