Stop! Take this quiz.
And then listen to this playlist:
For UNLV’s 2019 Homecoming, KUNV Radio created for the 57-song playlist to honor the university’s ’57 founding.
We created the quiz to determine which Rebel decade you belong in, according to your musical taste, not your actual age.
The playlist is for the baby boomer who likes “Old Town Road.” The Gen-Xer who unabashedly sings the lyrics to “Ice Ice Baby.” The Millennial who wants One Direction to get back together but can find The Beach Boys an entertaining substitute. The Gen Z-er who is now discovering how awesome Phil Collins is.
This playlist is intended to cross generational lines, according to its curator, Samantha Mann. The journalism student is an on-air host for KUNV Radio and a promotions director for the station.
The playlist’s overarching theme, Mann said, is a representation of multiple generations and the similarities between generations. She selected songs that were chart-toppers through the decades and songs with up-tempo beats.
“I tried to find songs that make you think of memories and when you think of a good time. For the most part, it's meant to be nostalgic,” Mann said. “I wanted to be representative of the full class of UNLV Rebels that have come through our campus.”
The playlist kicks off with the King of Rock and Roll. “All Shook Up,” an Elvis Presley chart-topper is a nod to the song’s release in1957 and the time Presley and Ann Margaret filmed a scene at the UNLV Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art for the 1964 film “Viva Las Vegas.”
It closes with a call for unity with “Higher Love,” a remix featuring Whitney Houston and Kygo. It’s the kind of jam we can all get behind.
So put on your AirPods, scrunchies, parachute pants, high top sneakers, Miami Vice sports coat, and tie-dye shirt to travel through the decades with a playlist made to celebrate UNLV’s story. Oh, and come join all the Homecoming festivities Nov. 7-16. You can bet there will be plenty of tunes to bring back your Rebel times.
