Now Breann Wickson, who earned an associate's degree at the College of Southern Nevada, plans to use UNLV's grant-in-aid program to begin working toward her bachelor's degree in criminal justice this spring semester,
Why are you at UNLV?
I moved back to Las Vegas after living in California for a year. I worked at UC Santa Barbara while I was there and enjoyed the university atmosphere, so when I came back I applied at UNLV hoping for the same experience.
What are your title and job duties here?
I am the administrative assistant III for the marketing & international business department in the Lee Business School. My duties include inputting class schedules in MyUNLV and assisting the department chair with various tasks, reports, and events. I manage the main office and assist any students who come by. I ensure all supplies are ordered and that faculty needs are met.
Where did you work previously?
Before spending a year at UC Santa Barbara as an admin assistant II, I worked in Las Vegas for the Haines & Krieger law firm for about four years as the human resources and accounts receivable manager.
What about UNLV surprised you when you arrived?
How the people in my college get along with one another. It seems like we have all worked together for years even though I have only been here since April.
Finish this sentence. "If I weren't able to work in my current field, I would...
Pursue the career field in which I have my associates degree — criminal justice, possibly working for the court system or in a correctional facility for juveniles.
What has been the proudest moment of your life?
When I received my associates degree from the College of Southern Nevada in 2008. I was the first in my immediate family to get a college degree.
I will start taking classes at UNLV this spring to pursue my bachelor's degree in criminal justice with a minor in psychology. The grant-in-aid was a big deciding factor in whether or not I was going to go back to school. I think it's great that the university has this type of aid available to their staff. It shows they care about the success of their employees.
One tip for success
Stand up (for yourself and what you believe in) and stick out (from the crowd)! Don't be afraid to be YOU!
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in the great state of Iowa until I moved here my freshman year of high school. I graduated from Foothill High School in Henderson in 2004.
Tell us something people would be surprised to learn about you.
When I was a little girl I wanted to be a professional cheerleader when I grew up. I don't know where I got that idea, but obviously my thoughts changed a little over the years!
What are your hobbies?
Watching movies, walking, yoga, and spending time with friends and family.
Who is your hero and why?
I would have to say my grandmother. She was born on the day Wall Street crashed and has lived through some trying times. She only has an eighth grade education but is probably one of the smartest people I know. She isn't one to complain about anything or speak ill of others. She has always told me when people are discourteous to you, "Kill them with kindness.” That is something I always try to remember and apply to my everyday life.
