Bobby Cordell, experiential learning coordinator in the Hotel College, was working in graphic design when he decided to switch to education. After earning an M.Ed. in higher education administration, he held jobs at the University of South Carolina, Columbia College, and New York University.
What led you to UNLV?
I was drawn to UNLV because of the job description and my interview was so fantastic. I had a lot of experience in managing experiential learning and thought I might be a good fit.
What do you enjoy most about your position here?
Thus far I have really enjoyed creating opportunities for students to have 'eureka' moments -- moments where their faces light up with realization as they begin to understand learning outcomes and their importance to our internship program. They also understand professional development and see a road to their dream.
What's the biggest challenge in your field?
Time. We have an office of three and sometimes see 60 to 80 students in a given day. Sometimes we find it hard to get done everything on our "to do" lists.
Proudest moment in your life?
I was the first person on either side of my family to get a bachelor's degree, and the first to get a master's degree, and will likely be the first to get a Ph.D.
One tip for success?
Do... Do... Always do something. Whatever your dreams are, whatever you're interested in, just do something that works toward that goal. Nothing can replace experience.
Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in the middle of the mountains in North Carolina in a house with many kids (six to 11, depending on what point in my childhood) with my grandparents and mother until I was in mid-elementary school. After that I finished growing up in Charleston, S.C.
If you could fix one thing in the world, what would it be?
I would try to improve the economic status of my hometown in North Carolina -- start a resort or something that draws tourism, business, and people.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
I was a tournament saber fencer. Also, I know how to do nine different forms of ballroom dance. And I have an unhealthy love of board games.
Pastime or hobbies?
I spend my spare time playing board games, reading, writing, drinking coffee (I ask baristas to surprise me when I go), and networking. I live for social engagement. I also swim every single day, draw, and clean my apartment only to mess it up again.
