Thomas Leslie (Music) recently was elected president of the American Bandmasters Association (ABA), the nation's most prestigious band association. Founded in 1929 by Edwin Franco Goldman, the ABA elected John Philip Sousa as its first honorary president. Leslie serves as the 76th president of this historical group. Presidency of the ABA is widely recognized as the highest honor and achievement in the concert band profession. ABA membership is by invitation only; this process includes analytical assessment of each candidate's curriculum vitae in addition to critical review of the musical output and concert performances of ensembles conducted by the candidate. Each of the 300 members of the organization participates in the analysis and election process. Leslie was the first conductor in Nevada to be elected to this highly celebrated musical society. As president, he will organize and present the ABA's 79th annual convention in Tampa, Florida, in March. Additional duties of the ABA president include setting/accomplishing goals for the organization in its many efforts to promote bands internationally, and recognizing outstanding achievements of band directors throughout North America. The position includes a rigorous travel and performance schedule from coast to coast in support of the mission of the association. Multiple guest conducting appearances nationally, in addition to organization of the upcoming annual conference, are primary objectives of the president. As a result of this honor, Leslie will be afforded invitations to conduct many of America's greatest bands, including United States Army Field Band, The United States Coast Guard Band, and The United States Marine Band, "The Presidents Own."
