Renata F. Guzzo (Hospitality) and her co-authors recently published the article "Should I admit my wrongdoings? Examining Stealing Thunder in the Context of Performance Evaluations," in the International Journal of Hospitality Management. The study study examined stealing thunder – a self-disclosure strategy in which people reveal negative information about themselves before another person does so to reduce its negative impact on an audience – as a trust tactic that employees might find useful for overcoming prior workplace mistakes during performance evaluation processes. Three experimental design studies revealed that stealing thunder significantly improved performance evaluations than when the strategy was not applied. Trust was found to be a significant mediator between the strategy and key performance indicators.
