Jonathan Rhodes Lee (Music) has just published an article in Music and Letters, an imprint of Oxford University Press and one of the leading international journals of musical scholarship. Lee's article, "Giulia Frasi: Singer of Sentiment," discusses the career of George Frideric Handel’s last leading lady, Giulia Frasi (fl. 1742–72). Lee shows that she worked in the midst of a culture of sentiment, which prized emotionally charged rhetoric as a means of inspiring virtue in contemporary audiences. Examination of Frasi’s musical education, the works that she performed, and her public persona shows that she cultivated a place in this sentimental milieu, both on and off the stage.
