Erika Engstrom (Communication Studies) and Joseph M. Valenzano III of the University of Dayton received the First Place Faculty Paper award for "True Believers, Poseurs, and Becoming 'Woke': Portrayals of Religion in 'Orange Is the New Black'" by the Religion and Media Interest Group of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication at the group's annual conference in Washington, D.C, in August. Their paper examines the various roles that religion plays in the critically acclaimed Netflix television series.
