Ph.D. student Dongwon Yun and associate professor Cass Shum (both Hospitality) recently published a paper titled, "An attribution account of the effects of leaders’ gender and abusive supervision on employee insubordination," in the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management. This paper seeks to understand the use of the common sayings "she is a bitch" and "he is having a bad day" in the context of the workplace by examining the gender bias in subordinates' attribution of abusive supervision. The study showed that female leaders suffer from more insubordination when they exhibit the same level of abusive supervision as their male counterparts, especially when they are working with subordinates with high gender-leadership bias.
