Arpita Basu (Kinesiology & Nutrition Sciences) was the lead author on a paper published in the Journal of Lipid Research. The report includes data from 30 years of follow-up from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases-funded Diabetes Control and Complications Trial and the Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications cohort. The findings reveal positive associations of serum apolipoprotein CIII and triglyceride-rich lipid particles with cardiovascular events (myocardial infraction and stroke) in patients with Type 1 diabetes. These findings suggest the need for lowering these lipids in Type 1 diabetes to reduce cardiovascular disease mortality.
