Arpita Basu (Kinesiology and Nutrition Sciences) published an original research article in the prestigious Journal of Lipid Research. Data were obtained from the landmark Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) and its follow-up phase, the Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC) study, showing higher levels of serum LDL-related lipids can increase risks of atherosclerosis even in well controlled type 1 diabetes. This six-year study involved 417 patients, and interestingly, significant associations were observed largely in men. As the first author of the paper, Basu had the great privilege to work with senior endocrinologists and diabetes researchers and continues to work on other reports from this large study.
