The string chamber music course is designed to give students who demonstrate a high proficiency level on their instruments a chance to develop the skills required to play in small ensembles, including:
- Listening
- Improving group ensemble
- Intonation
- Phrasing and articulation
- Matching bow strokes and speed, vibrato, dynamics, etc.
- Stylistic considerations from the classical period through 20th century
String chamber groups are coached weekly by members of the string faculty, and performances are given toward the end of each semester. Recent repertoire in student ensembles have included works of:
- Haydn
- Mozart
- Beethoven
- Schubert
- Mendelssohn
- Brahms
- Dvorak
- Shostakovich
