UNLV’s Contemporary Jazz Ensemble explores many different genres in and around the medium of Jazz, with a focus on workshopping new jazz compositions by UNLV students and Alumni. Contemporary Jazz Ensemble is directed by UNLV Alum Julian Tanaka. 

Members of the Contemporary Jazz Ensemble must be enrolled in order to participate in this class. As a member, you will:

• Explore and perform jazz music related to styles that have evolved since the mainstream and bebop eras.
• Be encouraged to write for the band.
• Create music according to your interests.
• Perform in the repertoire class and at various concerts during the term.
• Stay at the cutting edge of jazz music as it continues to evolve.
• Explore new directions in jazz.
• Be encouraged to find your voice and explore new territory with the intention of preparing yourself for a career in composition and performance.
