The Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV’s medical program was granted full accreditation status by the Liaison Committee of Medical Education (LCME) in 2020. The next full LCME accreditation survey is scheduled for October 27-29, 2025.
Accreditation is a voluntary, peer-review process designed to attest to the educational quality of new and established educational programs. The LCME accredits complete and independent medical education programs leading to the MD degree in the United States in which medical students are geographically located in the United States for their education and which are operated by universities or medical schools chartered in the United States. By judging whether medical education programs comply with nationally accepted standards of educational quality, the LCME serves the interests of the general public and of the medical students enrolled in those programs degree (as defined in the LCME document “Functions and Structure of a Medical School” March 2024).
Accreditation by the LCME establishes eligibility for selected federal grants and programs, including Title VII funding administered by the U.S. Public Health Service, and eligibility to take the USMLE. Eligibility of U.S. students to take the USMLE requires LCME accreditation of their school, and graduates of LCME-accredited schools are eligible for residency programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners requires that a physician has received a Doctor of Medicine degree from a medical school that is approved by the LCME, or from a LCME-approved program which provides a course of professional instruction equivalent to that provided in medical schools in the United States as a condition for licensure. The LCME is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and WFME as the notable authority for the accreditation of medical education programs leading to the MD degree.
