Arizona

In Arizona, the educational prerequisites for professional licensure or certification for the MSN-prepared Family Nurse Practitioner are:

• An official transcript directly from the institution attended that provides evidence of: 

1. A graduate degree with a major in nursing for RNP and CNS applicants.

• An official letter sent directly from the program to AZBN, stating the role and population focus of the program. 

• The educational program was: 

1. Part of a graduate degree/post-master's program at an accredited institution; OR

2. The program was approved or recognized in the U.S jurisdiction of program location for the purpose of granting APRN licensure or certification.

• National Certification or re-certification as an APRN in the role and population focus if certification was issued after 7-1-2004. Exception: a CNS granted a waiver of certification. 

• Meets practice requirement by verifying they have: 

1. Completed an advanced practice nursing education program within the past five years; or

2. Practiced for a minimum of 960 hours within the past five years where the nurse: 

   • Worked for compensation or as a volunteer, as an APRN: OR

   • Held a position for compensation or as a volunteer that required, preferred or recommended in the job description, the level of advanced practice certification being sought or renewed.

In Nevada, the educational prerequisites for professional licensure or certification for the Master of Science in Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner (MSN Family Nurse Practitioner) are an active Nevada RN License, National Certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner, and graduation from a nationally accredited Nursing Program with a minimum of 500+ hours of direct patient care.

The MSN Family Nurse Practitioner track does satisfy the Nevada licensure and certification requirements.

California

In California, the educational prerequisites for professional licensure or certification for the MSN-prepared Family Nurse Practitioner are:

1. Completed Verification of Nurse Practitioner Academic Program form submitted by the nurse practitioner academic program.

2. Completed Verification of Nurse Practitioner Certification by National Organization/Association form submitted by the respective organization. (AANP or ANCC)

3. Official, sealed transcript showing evidence of date of graduation or post-graduation nurse practitioner program.

Utah

In Utah, the educational prerequisites for professional licensure or certification for the MSN-prepared Family Nurse Practitioner are:

1. Submit official transcripts documenting at least a master’s degree in nursing which must also document the completion of coursework in advanced health assessment, diagnosis and treatment, and pharmacotherapeutics.

2. Submit official documentation of passing an approved certification examination as listed in subsection R156-31b-302c (1)(b) of the Utah Nurse Practice Act Rules.

In Nevada, the educational prerequisites for professional licensure or certification for the Master of Science in Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner (MSN Family Nurse Practitioner) are an active Nevada RN License, National Certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner, and graduation from a nationally accredited Nursing Program with a minimum of 500+ hours of direct patient care.

The MSN Family Nurse Practitioner track does satisfy those the Nevada licensure and certification requirements. However, UNLV School of Nursing has not made a determination with respect to the licensure requirements in any other state. As such, MSN Family Nurse Practitioner is not authorized in any other state in which the prospective or enrolled student resides. If you reside in a state other than Nevada, UNLV will refund the application fee in accordance with its procedures. License requirements for other states are being explored.
