The University of Nevada, Las Vegas student investment fund (RIG: Rebel Investment Group) was started in Fall of 2010 as a series of 3 Finance classes. It was seeded with $100,000 in March of 2011. Due to market conditions the first year student managers chose not to invest. New student managers in the Fall of 2011 took over the fund with just over $100,000 in cash. The Investor Policy Statement allows RIG to invest up to 70% in equity, requires an investment in bonds, while maintaining a portfolio beta at 1.5 or less.
With the Investor Policy Statement in mind, on the evening of October 3rd, 2011 the fund went 'live', as student managers could first begin allocating funds. Managers were slow to invest at first but since have started to build a well diversified portfolio.
