The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has established standards for the safe use of hoisting equipment 29 CFR 1910.179 and slings 29 CFR 1910.184. for material handling purposes. Personnel lifting requirements are contained in other OSHA standards and UNLV procedures and are not repeated in this program.
These standards call for the identification and training of equipment operators, safe use instructions and the inspection and documentation requirements for this type of equipment.
When implemented, these standards along with department procedures, help to ensure loads are properly handled, which in-turn prevent injuries and property damage.
In addition to links for the pertinent OSHA standards, information on this page also include inspection and use requirements for slings made from various materials and checklists for type of inspection required.
