Ying Bao is Associate Professor of Chinese at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. She holds a doctoral degree in east asian languages and literatures from the Ohio State University, and has taught all levels of Chinese language, literature, culture, and film at Denison University, Ohio State University, and Jiangnan University (Wuxi, China).

Dr. Bao’s research focuses on the relationships between arts and politics, sound and image, memory and nostalgia, language and identity, and cultural effects of migration in modern China. She has published on a wide range of topics, including film comedy in Maoist China, soundscape in post-1989 cinema, the coming of age of Chinese comics in the Republican period, minyao in contemporary China, and narrative strategies in Chinese American literature, etc. Her writings can be found in Asian Cinema, Comparative Literature: East & West, Encyclopedia of Contemporary Chinese Culture, Journal of Chinese Cinemas, Modern Chinese Literature and Culture, Popular Culture Review, etc.

Since her arrival at UNLV in 2008, Dr. Bao has been coordinating the Chinese Program, advising students on Chinese Studies, and developing Chinese curriculum. Her broad research interests allow her to design and teach a diverse range of upper-division courses on Chinese language, traditional and modern Chinese literature in translation, Chinese popular culture, modern Chinese culture through film, and Chinese immigrant literature and film. She has been nominated for William Morris Award for Excellence in Teaching, Donald Schmiedel Service Award, and Rita Deanin Abbey Teacher of the Year Award.
