Lukas Perry
Assistant Professor in Residence for Music Theory
Biography
Lukas Perry joins the faculty at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas as Assistant Professor-in-Residence of Music Theory, starting in Fall 2024. He is a PhD candidate in Music Theory at the Eastman School of Music (Rochester, NY), and his research interests include the harmonic syntax of Maurice Duruflé’s diatonic modal works and semiotics in videogame and film music. His dissertation develops a harmonic analysis system for Duruflé by incorporating traditional Riemannian functional theory, functional mixture, the double-tonic complex, and principles of the French plainchant reform movement. Additionally, he has presented on the semiotic and leitmotivic expression of “home” in the music of The Legend of Zelda, stylistic juxtapositions of pop and jazz as indicators of authenticity in La La Land, and the incorporation of Isabella Leonarda’s trio sonatas into the counterpoint classroom. Lukas has served as Editor and Reviews Editor for Intégral: The Journal of Applied Musical Thought, and in 2023, he was a recipient of the Eastman School of Music’s Teaching Assistant Prize. As a pianist, organist, and choral conductor, Lukas has served in numerous positions, including full-time Music Director at Church of the Assumption (St. Paul, MN), Artistic Director of the Minnesota Center Chorale, and Assistant Conductor of the Oratorio Society of Minnesota. He received masters' degrees in Music Theory and Choral Conducting from the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis, MN) and bachelors' degrees in Music and Mathematics from the University of Puget Sound (Tacoma, WA).
