Biography

Dr. Messenger is an Assistant Professor in the School of Public Health’s Environmental and Occupational Health Department. She has worked for more than 14 years in international public health, specialising in control of vector-borne diseases, primarily malaria and Chagas disease (American trypanosomiasis). Dr. Messenger was previously an Assistant Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM; 2019-2022) and has held an American Society for Microbiology Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta (2016-2019), a L’Oreal-UNESCO Women in Science UK and Ireland Fellowship (2016) and led a U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) sponsored cluster-randomized controlled trial in Muheza, Tanzania (2015-2016). To date, Dr. Messenger has collaborated on projects in more than 15 countries across Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa, maintaining close collaborations with local research institutions and key international donors and stakeholders, including the CDC, the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative, USAID, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). In addition to her research activities, she is passionate about teaching and mentoring the next generation of global health researchers. Dr. Messenger currently serves as an academic editor for the Malaria Journal and PLoS Global Public Health.
