Biography

Laura Shaw, MD, whose research interests include women’s health, maternity care, dermatology for primary care, and obesity identification and management, is an associate professor in the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV Department of Family and Community Medicine.

A graduate of the University of California Irvine School of Medicine, she completed her family medicine residency at Southern Illinois University.

Dr. Shaw is currently working on a grant to improve maternity care in Nevada.

She travels throughout Nevada to screen “downwinders” individuals who were exposed to radiation from atmospheric nuclear tests. She is a principal investigator in the Radiation Exposure Screening and Education Program (RESEP) and the Nevada Test Site Screening Program.

Dr. Shaw has designed new courses and curriculum for the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine and enjoys her faculty role in the Foundations of Clinical Practice (FCP) and Problem Based Learning (PBL) medical school courses. She has also directed many others, including Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) and Basic Life Support in Obstetrics (BLSO).

Board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and completed an obstetrics fellowship, she practiced medicine in private practice in Illinois and Florida and was on the faculty at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine prior to joining the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine.
